Panel 1

Young people at La Redoute

In August 1973 La Redoute, property of Mr. Tetard, was discovered by young summer visitors who decided to clear this historic monument.

A redoubt imagined by Colbert and Vauban, built by order of Louis XVI, modified by Napoleon, enlarged by the customs service, militarized by the German Army during the Second World War and which became a shelter for homeless families after the war.

Olivier Paz and his friends, with a passion for monuments in danger, spent 3 weeks of their summer vacation clearing the stairs and then the courtyard.

In 1989 Mr. Paz was elected mayor of Merville Franceville and resumed his youthful dream.

The ADEPMF, with the full support of the municipality endeavored to restore and bring the Redoute back to life.

It took almost 50 years and the courage and determination of many women and men to bring this formidable heritage site back to its original glory.
